High efficiencies have been achieved for TiO 2 -based devices sensitized, for example, with free-base and zinc porphyrin derivatives, presenting one or more carboxylic acid appends as anchoring groups, either in β or meso positions of the porphyrin central core, and also with multiple donor groups at the meso positions. After thorough investigations, there is a general agreement on the structural requirements of porphyrins to be used in DSSCs: 1) at least one anchoring group must be present for the covalent binding to the semiconductor surface, 2) metallic complexes (MP), especially the zinc ones, are preferred to free-base (H 2 P), because of their longer-lived singlet excited states and much lower oxidation potentials, and 3) bulky electron-donor meso-substituents favor electron injection in the semiconductor, as they originate an intrinsic dipole moment. Dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC) is one of these fields where porphyrin compounds have been widely employed, usually playing the role of sensitizing dyes. is critically analyzed which will be helpful to find a pathway in fine tuning the structure of the photosensitizer to meet the requirements of photovoltaic applications. Also, the progress in the structural modification of bio-inspired porphyrin based systems through introducing donor-acceptor moieties, metallation, nanoarchitecture designs, cosensitization strategies etc. This chapter discusses how the structural features of the porphyrin dyes are being exploited in various electron transfer processes of natural systems. From evaluation of these dyes, it is evident that 12 peripheral positions of the porphine core available for substitution makes it superior to other sensitizers. In this chapter the application of porphyrin based dyes for photovoltaics is highlighted. Light harvesting ability of these molecules finds applications in various fields such as dye sensitized solar cells, photodynamic therapy, bio-imaging and in therapeutics. Inspired from such systems, scientists have been keenly trying to mimic and elaborate it. Prior to the birth of DSSC itself, there existed porphyrins as light harvesting molecules in nature. In the era of dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC), maximum efficiency reaches up to 14.2%, achieved by using porphyrin based photosensitizers. Studies containing chromophores other than porphyrin derivatives are not included in this work. ![]() Also, the influence of the anchoring groups in the cell performance is discussed. For this reason we have attempted to describe the developments in the DSSCs of various porphyrin dyes with different anchoring groups linked through either meso or beta-positions. This review provides a summary of some of the most important developments and approaches that are used in order to improve the light collection efficiency of DSSCs based on porphyrin hybrid derivatives. ![]() Specifically, their high absorption ability in the visible region can be extended, and electron donor and anchoring groups with high chemical affinity to the cell should be part of the new design. ![]() Porphyrins offer an excellent platform for building such multi-chromophoric systems to self-assemble because of the availability of several substituent sites and their intrinsic spectroscopic properties. Their successful use in nature during photosynthesis must be the inspiration for new artificial antenna systems. In the design of new chromophores, with high efficiency, chemical stability and low cost materials for dye sensitized solar cells, porphyrin macrocycles could play a very important role. "The strategic insight that this is really going to move the needle in terms of subscriptions set the foundation for us to put much more resources in newsletters," he says. While the pandemic and an intense news cycle has helped the NYT to grow its newsletter subscriber list to 15 million people, large investments in newsletters have also paid off. "Our subscriber-only newsletter portfolio is designed to take people who are becoming habituated to The Times and used to reading us in the inbox and then really giving them more reason to subscribe and to retain their subscriptions by bringing them expert, interesting and provocative voices," says Pasick. Subscriber-only newsletters meanwhile offer deeper takes from subject experts on topics that subscribers care most about and the company has this year deepened its focus on developing the lower part of its “funnel” of readers. "The Morning is our big top of the funnel briefing which we often use as a way to kind of introduce people to times journalism and get them used to reading every day," says Pasick. Different newsletters can, however, play different roles in boosting the company's subscriber business.ĭaily briefings such as the hugely successful The Morning (17m subscribers) help introduce readers to the NYT and establish a relationship with the publication. "Subscription revenue is really driving the strategy for newsletters," says Pasick.Īccording to the NYT, 15 million people read one of its almost 60 newsletters every week which says Pasick share a goal of bringing "the best journalism to the inbox". Its own research has revealed that subscribing to more than one newsletter is the biggest predictor of someone becoming a long-term subscriber. "We have a big, world-class advertising sales operation but newsletters are really seen as one of the best ways to habituate readers and move them down the path to being paying subscribers." "Over the last three, four or five years the company's attention has really shifted towards subscription revenue and that was what kick-started this latest era for newsletters at the NYT," says Adam Pasick who oversees the publisher’s portfolio of newsletters. Although the NYT sent its first email newsletter some two decades ago, it’s been in the last few years that newsletters have really come into their own. The publisher counts some 8 million subscribers and newsletters have played a key role in getting there. This summer, in a bid to increase the value of a subscription, the publisher made 19 of its newsletters subscriber-only, among them newsletters from well-known columnists Jamelle Bouie, Paul Krugman and Frank Bruni. One s ubscription-driven publisher for which newsletters are increasingly important is the New York Times. Publisher newsletter strategies: New York Times For subscription-led businesses such as the Financial Times, exclusive content in newsletters is an important way of demonstrating the value of being a paid subscriber. Research by US non-profit, the Lenfest Institute shows a clear correlation between reader engagement (which it defines as active subscribers that log in to their accounts in a given month) and reader retention. Newsletters are currently one of the most popular ways for publishers to sidestep Google and Facebook’s algorithms and connect directly with readers - an increasingly important revenue stream.įor newsrooms relying on reader revenue, engagement is key. The answer to this data privacy and security problem is private encryption. But if hackers gain access to the decryption keys, then it’s a disaster. If your data is accessible to the storage provider, what will happen if the servers are hacked? Reading the data by hackers would not be easy because the data is encrypted before it is stored. There would be different settings for the planes as well, such as escort, where planes will fly along your ship to defend it from incoming fighters/bombers, and attack mode, where your planes will engage enemy ships/planes in an attack. There should be modern jet fighters added, which cost crystals, and all the WW2 planes should cost coins. Finally, the last thing I would like to see added are changes to planes. When playing online, you can select an option to do a fleet battle, where you and your opponent can send up to three ships into battle. These missions would be harder to complete, but have a bigger payout. It would be awesome to do missions where you and a couple of other players can play missions together. This would allow players to create their own missions, and even publish them, but for a small fee. It takes forever to be matched with another player. If it does happen to get updated, I think a few things would be nice to add. However, this game hasn’t been updated in quite a while. It is nice to be able to build your own ships and battle with other players. 40,000 gold for one plane? Why.įirst of all, I really enjoy this game. ![]() ![]() There is a reason I'm giving this 3 stars and that's because even though my experience was bad maybe others are better. The next ship I could get was 5,000 gold and you know how ya get gold? By being able to beat other ships, I couldn't do that. That was my down fall and I couldn't buy the ship back. Some concerns for new players, don't sell your first ship like I did. I just don't think the game is for me, but I do adore the concept. As a computer game, as any other phone system there would be no problem with this. I only got a Iphone 5 and it's about the size of my hand. Finger to move a direction (wheel) ok, fingers to zoom out and in ok, finger to move around camera, finger to shoot? See a problem. But I played and got killed every time, I am more finking more with the controls then I am actually playing the game. I wanted to go ahead and make my own ship, right sure fine I know it's not gonna be the best from the get go. ![]() A good melody has, as Aaron Copland once famously wrote, an “inevitability.” This logical shape is what makes it beautiful and, therefore, desirable. A tuneful melody is going to have a shape, a waxing and waning, a rise and fall of the pitches, a focal point or two, and a long-term forward motion from note to note to note to its logical conclusion. Even though there may be recordings of such a song by professional singers with very elaborate instrumental accompaniments, this is not the only way that it can be performed. Indeed, such a melody is generally something that the non-professional can sing unaccompanied. Such a melody is one that is so appealing that people want to “carry it with them,” sing, hum, even whistle it while they are driving to work, doing the dishes, folding laundry, etc. I am speaking about the sort of melody that has a winsomeness to it, even a portability. In fact, this used to be the hallmark of the popular song. Perhaps I should clarify that when I say “melody,” I mean a tuneful melody-the kind that popular songs used to have in abundance. One thing struck me continually and almost without exception I felt like the old lady in the 1980s hamburger commercial who would exclaim, “Where’s the beef?”Įxcept that I would exclaim, “Where’s the melody?” Over and over.
